Cocoa’s Gentle Watch

Hi everyone
My husband went to visit his brother in the east the other day, so for a while it was just me and our three cats.
Every evening, we usually all go out to the backyard. While I am gardening, my husband keeps an eye on the cats. They chase each other, go after bugs, and climb trees. They just love being outside.
Usually, when they notice the humans are busy, that is when they start scheming. They will jump on the fence, climb up onto the roof, or simply vanish into thin air, leaving us searching for them.
This time, with my husband away, I had to water the garden and watch the cats at the same time. I was not sure I could manage both. For the first couple of days, I tried a time delayed strategy. I let one kitty out at a time. But it was too hot to stay outside that long, so it did not really work.
So I looked at Cocoa and explained to him mentally what was going on.
The next day, when I opened the back door, they all tried to rush out as usual. Ruby darted right through the magnetic mesh screen I had set up for them. But Cocoa did not. When I turned around, he was sitting there, watching me, waiting. Almost as if he was asking for permission.
I told him he could go too, and then he stepped outside.
They were wonderful. They stayed nearby and did not disappear once. While I was gardening, Cocoa came over to check on me several times. I told him I was fine, and praised him for being such a good boy.
Then he would go check on the others, patrol the fence line, and circle back to me again.
I am so grateful to live with him.
Do you live with smart pets too?
Love and Peace
Keiko
